Why turtles?

Turtle and graph

The turtle that appears on the Menu Screen

Why are there graphics of turtles on the CyberSlate menu screen and some of the panels?

CyberSlate and Personal Computers were born at the same time (early 1980’s), and one of the early computer languages was called Logo, in which the only object on the screen (or a robot on the floor) was a turtle. Students learned how programming language worked by “teaching” the turtle how to move around the screen, and making each move into a “command.”  To help students visualize the command, we used turtle hand puppets.  The students learned to “think like the turtle.” So when the earliest fluencies were developed, the students connected the turtle with thinking and learning.
